Prof Richard Sullivan (Kings College London, London, UK) and Dr James Glasbey (University of Birmingham, Birmingham, UK) discuss Dr Glasbey’s study regarding the resilience of elective cancer surgery systems during COVID-19 lockdowns.
This is an international, prospective cohort study of planned surgery for 15 tumour types in 61 countries.
Initially, they discussed the background of the study. Dr Glasbey explains that this study aimed to identify immediate areas for system strengthening by comparing the delivery of elective cancer surgery during COVID-19 in periods of lockdown versus light restriction.
They further discuss the results and impact of the study.
They conclude by talking about the what current and future periods of societal restriction may demand from elective surgery systems.
