Dr Elysse Bautista-Gonzalez speaks to ecancer about a talk she presented at London Global Cancer Week 2025 on the 'Resource disparities in cancer treatment in Mexico'.
She describes a study she conducted on this topic which aimed to find out whether research facilities in Mexico were distributed evenly across five cancer types (lung, breast, colorectal, prostate and cervical).
Dr Bautista-Gonzalez reported that out of the 14,000 facilities analysed, only 5% provided cancer care - with most of them focussing on diagnosis rather than treatment.
She shares her concerns at this lack of infrastructure and highlights that it explains why patients have such difficulty navigating the health system.
