Dr Shunichi Takeda – Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine, Japan

Dr Shunichi Takeda explains the explored molecules responsible for the extraordinary efficient gene-targeting in DT40 cells at the IFOM-Kyoto University Symposium in Milan and how this gene can be manipulated in order progress cancer treatment.

Can you tell us about your homologous recombination research?

When I was in Basel I found that chicken B-cells show extraordinarily efficient homologous recombination and this efficient homologous recombination contributed to the great efficiency of the gene targeting. So if you can introduce this efficient homologous recombination to the other organisms such as plants and then you can manipulate the genes in the plant very easily. And also if you can also introduce this chicken character to the human cells then, exactly like in yeast, you can also manipulate the human genes in living human cells very, very easily. So I want to clarify the molecular mechanism for this extraordinarily efficient gene targeting and then I want to introduce this character to other organisms. So that’s my dream.

What would you l ike to achieve with your visit to Italy?

Yes, there are two purposes: I want to also promote exchange in research and I am collaborating with Dana Branzei in IFOM. The second purpose is I want to promote also the student exchange and IFOM is very, very kind and hosted 17 medical students, these are eight years, and the students had a very happy time in IFOM. So I’d like to continue this great relationship with IFOM. So this is the second purpose I come here.
